Jeff Dodge's 2019 Emmy Predictions

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards is coming up on Sunday, September 22 at 8pm ET/5pm PT on FOX, hosted by no one--following in the footsteps of the Oscars. Below are my predictions.

(The winners in a handful of categories were recently announced at the Creative Arts Emmys, but I still wanted to mention what my predictions were so that everything is together in one blog post.)

American Idol 17: Top 3/Finale

Air Date: Sunday, May 19, 2019 (8-11pm)

Last season, like every season before it, American Idol aired a two-night finale. This time, they've combined the final performances and the winner announcement into one mega-finale episode--three hours long!

The Top 3 performed, then one was eliminated. They had the usual star-studded performances. Then the Top 2 performed one final time, and the winner was announced.

Goodbye, 'Big Bang Theory'--And Thank You!

The Big Bang Theory has come to an end.

12 seasons. 279 episodes.

I am really going to miss this show.

My journey with this sitcom didn't start at the beginning, though. It was the summer of 2012. I was setting up to record a TV show, and the channel happened to be on TBS. This was the very first summer that The Big Bang Theory was airing in syndication on cable TV (having started the previous September).

There's only one more week until we crown another American Idol winner. But there's still the matter of finding out who will make it to that finale.

Five contestants enter tonight's penultimate season 17 episode, with two going home at the end of the night. The judges can't save them this time. Who stays? Who goes?

Another Sunday means another live-in-every-time-zone episode of American Idol season 17--the best singing competition show ever--which, by the way, has been beating The Voice in the ratings lately. Hopefully, that keeps happening for the rest of the season.

There's only six finalists left, and two performance each to get through tonight.

It's the start of the most exciting part of ABC's version of American Idol: the live shows! And when I say live, I really mean it. Like they did last year, Idol is now live in every time zone for the rest of the season, and us viewers are voting in real time, with the results being announced at the end of the episode.

Tonight, the Top 10 of season 17 performed Disney songs, and two were eliminated.

The auditions, Hollywood Week, Showcase, Top 20 and Celebrity Duets are all behind us. Now it's time for the Top 14 to perform on American Idol. That means it's time for us the viewers to vote for the first time in season 17. Based on our votes, seven contestants will advance to the Top 10. Then the judges will fill out the remaining three spots, based on redux performances.

For the first time in #AmericanIdol history, #RyanSeacrest isn't hosting the show--they're saying he was under the weather, but I'm pretty sure this was a planned absence that we knew about before he actually did get sick, so I'm not sure about this narrative. #Idol #IdolDuets

Alyssa Raghu & Julia Michaels ("Issues"): I'm pretty sure this arrangement is different from the original, & I'm not sure about it in terms of creating excitement on stage. But what was great is their voices blended together very well--they sounded beautiful! #AmericanIdol #Idol

Eddie Island & Lukas Graham ("7 Years"): I have to say, this performance was really enjoyable. Lukas' voice is obviously very unique. And Eddie had some strong moments, even though he's still not anywhere close to being my favorite. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop20 #IdolDuets

Wade Cota & lovelytheband ("Broken"): I'm not sure about this. At times, he seemed awkward on stage. Other times, he kept stepping forward to be in the spotlight; I get that he's the contestant but this is still a duet. I'm seeing more of his personality which is good. #IdolDuets

Ryan Hammond & Cynthia Erivo ("Hold On, I'm Comin'"): I look forward to Ryan's performances whenever they come on. They worked perfectly as duet partners, their energy radiated off each other, and they just plain had fun--and I had fun watching. They were on fire! #AmericanIdol

Evelyn Cormier & Chris Isaak ("Wicked Game"): This is one of my favorite songs ever! However, I don't think this worked as a duet w/ these 2 together. Not really any chemistry, and the age difference made the lyrics kinda creepy. Also, it was boring at times. #AmericanIdol #Idol

Logan Johnson & Julia Michaels ("What a Time"): Julia sounded fantastic. The way she looked deep into his eyes was deliberate, part of the story (maybe trying to put him at ease). Logan improved upon his very weak performance last week, but was it enough? I don't know. #IdolDuets

Raquel Trinidad & lovelytheband ("Tiny Dancer"): She had one of the weakest performances last week. This most certainly improved upon that. It wasn't bad or anything, but I don't think it'll be very memorable once we look back on all the duets (maybe a little karaoke). #IdolDuets

Alejandro Aranda & Ben Harper ("There Will Be a Light"): I wonder why he decided to do two super low-tempo songs back-to-back. He needs to change it up and go more mid-tempo maybe. But the overall quality of tonight's performance was probably better than last time. #AmericanIdol

Dimitrius Graham & Lukas Graham ("Love Someone"): This duet really worked--because their harmonies were fantastic. And Lukas' voice was, once again, great--I think I focused more on him a lot, though. But when they were together, it was magic. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets

Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon & Cynthia Erivo ("Time After Time"): I absolutely LOVE this song; with the right voices on it, it can be exquisite--their voices together were beautiful. He's 1 of my favorites in the competition. I had a smile on my face at the end. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets

Eliminated: Ryan (WTF?!?!), Logan & Raquel.

As you can see, I'm not happy about one of the results. But the Top 14 is set, which means us viewers get to start voting for the first time this season. After the next two episodes, the Top 10 will be finalized. See ya then...
