American Idol 17: Top 8
Air Date: Sunday, April 28, 2019 (8-10pm)
Themes: Queen/Movie Music Duets
With only eight finalists left and only a few weeks left in season 17, with two going home every week, American Idol is really heating up now.
Here's my live Twitter recap for the Top 8...
[More: American Idol Live Twitter Recap: The Top 10 Perform]
My thoughts on all of tonight's #AmericanIdol Top 8 performances. The theme is #Queen, and the finalists will also team up for duets on movie songs. The guest mentor is none other than #AdamLambert! #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Walker Burroughs ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"): This was a very karaoke performance. As I've said before, I've never been a fan of his, but last week was his best performance. He's reverted back tonight. #AmericanIdol #Queen #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Madison Vandenburg ("The Show Must Go On"): It's gonna be hard for her to top last week's performance, of course, but tonight she still sounded great, especially on the chorus since that's when she was able to really belt it out. #AmericanIdol #Queen #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019

Laine Hardy & Laci Kaye Booth ("Jackson"): I don't really have much to say about this. It was definitely a filler duet, but still a fine performance. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon ("Who Wants to Live Forever"): I don't think this was that exciting of a performance--I was drawn in more towards the end when the song got a tad more dramatic. But that doesn't take away from the fact that his voice is still fantastic. #AmericanIdol #Queen— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Alejandro Aranda ("Under Pressure"): Okay, I know I said Jeremiah wasn't too exciting. Well, Alejandro's was far less exciting--I found it somewhat boring (and it's unfortunate b/c it's a great song). Nothing against his fans, but I just don't understand the appeal. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Wade Cota & Alyssa Raghu ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough"): Definitely an odd pairing b/c they're nothing alike musically. It was still a fun performance...b/c who doesn't love this song? If I had to pick the better vocals, though, I'd go with Alyssa. #AmericanIdol #Queen #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Madison Vandenburg & Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon ("A Million Dreams"): Love that these two were paired together since they're two of my favorites. And this was quite a beautiful performance. Their voices blended together really well. I'd love to hear them duet again. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Laine Hardy ("Fat Bottomed Girls"): #Queen has one of the best music catalogs around. With songs like this one, it's hard not to have fun with it. And Laine certainly did. Such a fun and entertaining performance! And it was cool seeing him rock out on the guitar. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019

Avett Maness, this little kid who is blind and a viral sensation, apparently, performs (singing and playing the piano) "Bohemian Rhapsody." #AmericanIdol #Queen #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("Love of My Life"): This was a very understated performance. Last week, I used the word "subtle." But she's able to make these performance work without needing to go over-the-top on stage or go wild vocally. She knows what works for her. #AmericanIdol #Queen— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Alejandro Aranda & Walker Burroughs ("Mrs. Robinson"): As soon as they started singing, I knew I wasn't going to like it. And it's not like it's a bad song or anything. But their voices were way too quiet. I don't understand the strategy behind this arrangement. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Wade Cota ("We are the Champion"): One of the best #Queen songs of all time! I'm not sure about Wade's rendition. A couple moments in the back half that hit the mark, but overall I just don't know about this. And it looked like he forgot the lyrics at one point. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Alyssa Raghu ("Somebody to Love"): One of my fav #Queen songs! Quite the dramatic visual start! Unfortunately, this won't go down as one of Alyssa's better performances--mainly due to the vocals. She of course had her moments, but her voice wasn't always spot-on. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
As #AmericanIdol goes into commercial, there's a video talking about auditions for next year. So I guess this is confirmation that #Idol's coming back for another season! #Queen— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019

In the Top 6:
Jeremiah, Laci, Madison, Laine, Alejandro & Wade.
Eliminated:
Walker & Alyssa.
The judges don't use their Save.#AmericanIdol #Idol #Queen
I said last week that I wasn't surprised by Uche and Dimitrius' eliminations. The same goes for Alyssa tonight since she (like U & D) was in danger in the Top 14 and had to be chosen by the judges to join the Top 10. #AmericanIdol #Idol #Queen— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
I'm glad Walker is gone. He just wasn't ready for this competition. He has a lot of work to do if he wants to continue pursuing music. I don't think I've said this on Twitter before, but I've at least thought it before: Walker is the Kevin Covais of this season. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 29, 2019
Once again, the eliminations were not a surprise. Now that there's only six left, what happens now? All of the Top 14 Danger Zone contestants are gone. I think Wade will be on the chopping block next week. As for the other spot, I don't know; it might just come down to the actual performances that night. See ya then...
