American Idol 17: Top 10
Air Date: Sunday, April 21, 2019 (8-10:01pm)
Theme: Disney Night
It's the start of the most exciting part of ABC's version of American Idol: the live shows! And when I say live, I really mean it. Like they did last year, Idol is now live in every time zone for the rest of the season, and us viewers are voting in real time, with the results being announced at the end of the episode.
Tonight, the Top 10 of season 17 performed Disney songs, and two were eliminated.
Here is my live Twitter recap for the Top 10...

I'm live-tweeting tonight's #AmericanIdol as it airs live in every time zone. Here are my thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop10 #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019

Uche ("I 2 I"): His Entertainer hat was still on, as always--he completely worked that stage & even interacted with the backup singers--but this song also allowed him to showcase his voice, which I enjoyed. On the downside, this won't be one of his memorable sets. #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("I See the Light"): This was the epitome of a Disney performance. Her voice was very soft and calming. I loved the lift up to that falsetto at the end. I mean, this was quite beautiful--subtle, to be sure, but that's part of what made it work. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Alejandro Aranda ("Remember Me"): In his upper register, this song really suited his voice, which was very smooth. Having said that, I didn't really get anything from this--I'm sorry to say I found it quite boring. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol #IdolTop10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Alyssa Raghu ("Colors of the Wind"): I've been a fan of hers this season. I couldn't believe she was in danger last week. And even though her voice sounded absolutely beautiful on such a great song, I worry that she'll be in danger again, despite that. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Taking a break from the competition for a moment, #Glee alum #LeaMichele sings "Part of Your World" from #TheLittleMermaid with the #IdolTop10. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Wade Cota ("You've Got a Friend in Me"): Caleb did this for #DisneyNight last year. I'm not sure how to feel about this. There were a few moments I liked, especially the way Wade ended it, but I just don't know about this. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
I just voted for @lacikayebooth on @AmericanIdol! Vote for your favorites now! #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Dimitrius Graham ("You'll Be in My Heart"): He earned that save from the danger zone last week. It'll be interesting to see if he can keep enough support now. If anything does, it might be that big note he belted out & how much stronger he got afterwards. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Walker Burroughs ("When She Loved Me"): I've never been a fan of Walker. But I have to say, this may have been his best performance. He was at the piano, with a calm and steady performance/song. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol #IdolTop10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Taking another break from the competition, last year's #AmericanIdol winner and runner-up #MaddiePoppe and #CalebLeeHutchinson perform "A Whole New World" from #Aladdin. #Idol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Madison Vandenburg ("How Far I'll Go"): I loved this performance! As the song went on, she just kept getting better and better, and her voice just kept belting out stronger and stronger. Wow! #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
I just voted for @MadisonV on @AmericanIdol! Vote for your favorites now! #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Laine Hardy ("Oo-De-Lally"): I didn't know what he would sing, but something like this never crossed my mind. While being kind of a quirky song for him, it also kinda fit as well. This won't be one of his memorable performances, but it was still fun. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon ("Candle on the Water"): Man, that voice! I didn't recognize this song, but it didn't matter because he killed it! I just...that voice! What a way to end the night! #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019

Results:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
In the Top 8:
Laine, Madison, Alejandro, Jeremiah, Walker, Laci, Wade & Alyssa.
Eliminated:
Uche & Dimitrius.
The judge don't use their Save.#AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol
It's not surprising that Uche and Dimitrius were eliminated since both were in danger last week. The judges' comments to Uche in particular seemed sorta tepid and like the kiss of death. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
It's interesting that they're bringing back the Judges' Save. I don't believe they had it last year, which means they're reviving it from the FOX era. Since two contestants go home each week, I assume that means three will have to leave next after they use the Save. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 22, 2019
There's a lot to love about this "live in every time zone" format. One of them is how it creates a lot of exciting and heightens the anticipation, knowing that you only have so much time to vote and that you'll know the results in mere minutes.
Regarding tonight's episode in particular, they had Lea Michele and Maddie Poppe/Caleb Lee Hutchinson perform to fill time, of course. However, I kind of think it would have been better if those performances were saved for after every contestant had performed but before the results were announced. That way, viewers could have some breathing room and finalize their votes if they needed to.
Now there's only eight singers left. The judges still have their Save. What will happen next? We'll see in another live episode. See ya then...
