American Idol 17: Top 20 (Celebrity Duets--Part 1)
Air date: Sunday, April 7, 2019 (8-10pm)
When ABC revived American Idol last year, they added a new element to the semifinals--celebrity duets. They were a lot of fun then, and they're bringing it back this year.
Here is my Twitter recap for Part 1 of the Top 20 celebrity duet performances...

The #AmericanIdol Top 20 round continues tonight with Part 1 of the celebrity #IdolDuets! This thread will chronicle my thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop20— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Walker Burroughs & Jason Mraz ("Have It All"): You could tell who is & isn't the seasoned performer. Walker's dancing was awkward--cringe-worthy (still needs to work on stage presence). Their vocals went well together, though, so IDK. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop20 #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Kate Barnette & Pat Benatar/Neil Giraldo ("Heartbreaker"): LOVE this song! And Benatar's still got it! This was a really fun performance. I don't believe this is Kate's natural music genre; b/c of that, PB's voice shined more, but still great. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Riley Thompson & Brett Young ("Like I Loved You"): This Top 20 round (last wk & tonight) has given me the opportunity to really listen to Riley's voice--and I really like the tone in her country voice; there's just something about it. I hope she stays.#AmericanIdol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Uche & Shaggy ("I Need Your Love"): Of course they paired these 2 together! B/c Shaggy's voice is so unique he couldn't help but outshine Uche vocally. They both had so much fun together, I doubt he's leaving. But can he get back to his Hawaii greatness? #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Madison Vandenburg & Pat Benatar/Neil Giraldo ("We Belong"): Is it just me or were there times it seemed Madison was lost on that stage--maybe dwarfed by the greatness that is Benatar? She got better towards the end, incl those big notes. Hope she stays. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Shawn Robinson & Elle King ("Proud Mary"): He had one of the best performances last week--gonna be hard for him to top. Tonight he was still able to showcase his upper register. The song stagnated in the middle--& something got messed up lyrically. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Ashley Hess & Jason Mraz ("I'm Yours"): I love that Ashley was at the piano at the start. And I absolutely love the stripped-down arrangement--that elevated this performance so much! I had a smile on my face quite a bit. Feel-good & beautiful. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Bumbly & Shaggy ("Angel"): There's no one that sounds like Shaggy--for a while, I kinda wanted just a solo from him. But you know what? Bumbly was quite a bit better than last week, especially at the end. But was it enough to stay? I don't know. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth & Brett Young ("Mercy"): Their harmonies together were exquisite! It was those moments in which Laci really shined. And Brett's voice is better than I've ever given him credit for. The overall duet performance was great. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop20 #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Laine Hardy & Elle King ("The Wait"): This song is very much in Laine's wheelhouse. I easily could have listened to him do this solo. So while the addition of Elle wasn't necessary, she added a new element/layer that only added to the performance. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
My favorites of the night: Ashley Hess, Riley Thompson, Laci Kaye Booth & Laine Hardy.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
The weakest of the night: Walker Burroughs.#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop20 #IdolDuets
Results:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 8, 2019
Staying: Laci (no surprise), Ashley (yay!), Walker (WTF?!?!), Madison (yes!), Uche (no surprise again), Riley (thank you!) & Laine (phew!)
Eliminated: Kate (sorta disappointed), Shawn (that mess-up did him in) & Bumbly (good).#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop20 #IdolDuets
We're now halfway through the two-part celebrity duet round of the Top 20. There were some standouts, some forgettable performances and some misses. Next time, we finish up the duets, the judges eliminate three more contestants and the field will be down to the Top 14. See ya then...
