American Idol 17: Top 6
Air Date: Sunday, May 5, 2019 (8-10:01pm)
Themes: Woodstock/Showstoppers
Another Sunday means another live-in-every-time-zone episode of American Idol season 17--the best singing competition show ever--which, by the way, has been beating The Voice in the ratings lately. Hopefully, that keeps happening for the rest of the season.
There's only six finalists left, and two performance each to get through tonight.
Here is my live Twitter recap for the Top 6...
[More: American Idol Live Twitter Recap: The Top 6 Perform]
I'm live-tweeting tonight's LIVE #AmericanIdol Top 6!— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
The two themes are: #Woodstock and Showstoppers.
The guest mentor is: Lauren Daigle
My thoughts on all the performances...#Idol #IdolTop6
Madison Vandenburg ("Piece of My Heart"): I love this song, & remember it being performed way back in #AmericanIdol S1. For Madison, I loved the moments when she got to belt it out, especially at the end. But she's not a rocker, which this song is, so it also disadvantaged her.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Laine Hardy ("I Don't Need No Doctor"): As we can see from Madison a moment ago to now Laine, song choice is key. He had a song here that fit his style really well, and he sounded good on it. I hope his 2nd song takes it up a notch to "memorable" status. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon ("Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"): This was a pretty laid-back performance overall, particularly the 1st half, and I'm thinking, this is fine, good voice. But then things really kicked into high gear in the 2nd half when his voice really belted. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("To Love Somebody"): When I heard the song title, I thought, okay, this could work really well for Laci. And I think the overall vibe did work. But her voice didn't sound as good as I was hoping it would, which is unfortunate. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Alejandro Aranda ("White Rabbit"): I didn't get it. I didn't like it AT ALL. Terrible song choice--it didn't showcase his voice very well. His eyes were closed the entire time (did he not know there was an audience?). This was by far the worst of the night so far. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Wade Cota ("With a Little Help From My Friends"): Of course Wade would choose this song. After last week, I knew that tonight would likely be his last night on #AmericanIdol. But if he sticks around, it'll be b/c of a performance like this--it was great! I enjoyed it! #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Gabby Barrett, last year's 3rd place finisher, returns to perform her single "I Hope." I really like this song! (Did Ryan say nearly 20 million streams?) I'm looking forward to whenever she comes out with an album (she has signed with Warner Bros Nashville). #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Now that the #Woodstock part of the night is over, it's time for the Showstoppers theme... #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop6— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Madison Vandenburg ("I Surrender"): When she said the song title, I knew I better brace myself for this--Celine's my fav singer of all time, and I LOVE this song. Round 1 didn't showcase her in the best way; this was the perfect song for her--she sounded amazing! #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019

Alejandro Aranda ("Poison"): It's an original song. Okay, so there's some good and some bad. The good: it was a lot better than his 1st song and showcased his voice in a really good way. The bad: it was kinda boring; I started checking out partway through. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("Open Arm"): I was worried at first, but overall this was a really nice performance. A very laid-back feel. Smooth voice. There was a moment in the 2nd half when she held a note out--and I really felt it. Hope her 1st song doesn't take her down. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon ("Somewhere"): Man, he sure knows how to showcase his voice beautifully. He lagged for a little bit in the middle--nerves?--but things got back on track when he really went there vocally and just belted it out, blowing me away. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Wade Cota ("Through the Valley"): I mean, this wasn't a bad performance at all; I just want to say that. However, I'm certainly not going to remember it compared to his first performance. If he goes home, I wouldn't be surprised. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
Laine Hardy ("Johnny B. Goode"): I really liked this song choice! It was fun and allowed him to have a fun time on that stage. And like I said earlier, he just knows how to choose songs that fit his style--and that's a big part of what makes or breaks a performance. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019

I am not happy by tonight's results.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
First, I assumed that Wade & Laci would be eliminated. Then when Jeremiah ended up in danger and the judges said they would be using their Save, I assumed it'd be for him. But no...Laci got it. That shocked me!#AmericanIdol #Idol
Did the judges unanimously agree to save Laci, or did #KatyPerry make an executive decision? I wanna know what happened there.#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop6 #Woodstock— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
I am soooo disappointed that Jeremiah was eliminated (and that the Save wasn't used on him). He's one of the best singers in the competition this year, and he was one of my favorites. I don't know what else to say, I'm sitting here shocked. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop6— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 6, 2019
As you can see, I'm not happy by tonight's elimination. I haven't had time yet to check on reactions online, but I hope I'm not alone in this thinking. Now I'm worried for all my favorites. At this rate, Alejandro will probably end of up winning. Ugh. No, gotta stay positive.
And since the Judges' Save was used, does that mean three will be going home next week? Or will things stay as usual, resulting in three contestants in the finale? I guess we'll find out next time. See ya then...
