American Idol 17: Top 5
Air Date: Sunday, May 12, 2019 (8-10:01pm)
Themes: Bobby Bones' Picks/Elton John/Hero Tributes
There's only one more week until we crown another American Idol winner. But there's still the matter of finding out who will make it to that finale.
Five contestants enter tonight's penultimate season 17 episode, with two going home at the end of the night. The judges can't save them this time. Who stays? Who goes?
Here is my live Twitter recap for the Top 5...
[More: American Idol Live Twitter Recap: The Top 6 Perform]
I'm live-tweeting tonight's LIVE #AmericanIdol Top 5!— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
The three themes are: #EltonJohn, Hero Tributes & #BobbyBones' Picks.
My thoughts on all the performances...#Idol #IdolTop5 #MothersDay
Well, I don't know if I'll be able to live-tweet tonight. My screen on ABC says there's a service interruption, and course it's the only channel I need right now that's having this issue. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
I've got ABC back now, but I've missed the first two performances, it looks like. So I'll give my thoughts on Wade & Laci's first round performances later on either when they're on YouTube or the 8pm re-broadcast. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Alejandro Aranda ("No Woman No Cry"): His voice sounded nice on this song, really smooth. I still wasn't feeling anything from him, which is a common theme when it comes to him. And I've heard this song done better. BUT it was better than he's been lately. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laine Hardy ("Can't You See"): Once again, Laine sounds really good. He is consistent in delivering solid performances. Like his Round 1 performance from last week, this isn't very memorable, and hopefully the next two shine. I always like listening to his voice. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Madison Vandenburg ("What About Us"): LOVE this #Pink song! This is very much the style I see her doing post-#AmericanIdol. And overall she did a really good job. A couple bumps in the 1st half, but the 2nd half was fantastic--belting it out like no one else can in the T5. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Wade Cota ("Rocket Man"): I never talk about the singers' fashion choices, but why did they give him those sunglasses? I know it's Elton, but that's not Wade. Okay, now for the performance...Good, but nothing special. That falsetto surprised me--in a good way. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)"): Such a fun song! And overall, I really enjoyed this! There was a rough falsetto, but outside of that, I don't think I have anything bad to say about this performance. #AmericanIdol #Idol #EltonJohn— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Alejandro Aranda ("Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word"): Definitely one of his better performances. Some of the falsettos didn't always land smoothly, but overall I liked this performance. So far tonight, he's setting himself up really well to advance to the finale. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
(Wade's Round 1 performance is now on YouTube, so here are my thoughts on that...)— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Wade Cota ("You are the Best Thing"): I enjoyed this performance. It felt very much in his wheelhouse and a laid-back style. Nothing else to say, really.#AmericanIdol #Idol
Madison Vandenburg ("Your Song"): This is one of those songs that's been done a million times on #AmericanIdol--and it never gets old for me b/c I love it. As for Madison, I absolutely LOVED this performance! Wow, her voice was so exquisite & beautiful! #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laine Hardy ("Something About the Way You Look Tonight"): I said earlier I was looking for Laine to deliver something more memorable than his Round 1 performance. I don't think this was it. I mean, still good vocally, of course. But this didn't do anything for me. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
(Laci's Round 1 performance is now on YouTube, so here are my thoughts on that...)— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("The House That Built Me"): So glad she did Miranda Lambert! This was quite a lovely performance. There were a couple moments towards the end that I really felt. #AmericanIdol
— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Wade Cota ("Hard Luck Woman"): Now that he's done all three performances, I think I can safely say he coasted this entire night--he was never terrible tonight, but he never had a breakout performance either. So it's hard to say what his chances are. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laci Kaye Booth ("Dreams"): She picked some great songs tonight! Unfortunately, she's probably going home since America did eliminate her last week (but saved by the judges). Her voice sounded really nice, really smooth, on this Fleetwood Mac tune. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Madison Vandenburg ("Make You Feel My Love"): Like Laci, Madison picked some great songs; they really showcased her voice in the best way. This final one was probably the weakest of the three--did I hear some sharp notes at times? But I still hope she advances. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laine Hardy ("Hey Jude"): This was definitely his best song choice of the night. I have heard better renditions on these shows over the years (there were moments that I thought were lagging a little). But like with Madison, I hope he's in the finale. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Alejandro Aranda ("Blesser"): Oh, he's doing another original song. Have none of the other contestants ever written their own music before? I wanna hear their originals. As for Alejandro, I didn't get it. The piano beat didn't match up with the beat of his vocals. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
My favorite of the night:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Madison Vandenburg (2nd song)
[Honorable mentions to Laci Kaye Booth's 1st & 3rd songs.]
The weakest of the night:
Alejandro Aranda (3rd song)#AmericanIdol #Idol
My Votes:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Madison Vandenburg: 10 (app) + 10 (website) + 10 (texting) = 30 (max votes).#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #EltonJohn
Results:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
In the Top 3 (Finale):
Laine, Madison (yes!!!) & Alejandro
Eliminated:
Wade & Laci#AmericanIdol #Idol #EltonJohn
This was the best-case scenario I could have hoped for, based on the five who were left. If you read my tweets, you know I didn't want Alejandro in the finale, but we all knew it was gonna happen. But I'm really happy & excited that Laine & Madison are still here. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
As long as either Laine or Madison win next week, I'll be happy. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2019
Laine Hardy, Madison Vandenburg and Alejandro Aranda are in the finale! Madison and Laine have been two of my favorites throughout the season.
We all knew Laine would be here. But I was so worried that Madison was going to get cut sometime in the past couple weeks--not because I thought she deserved it or anything but because I worried that people thought she had hit her stride too early. So I'm really happy that she's here. Who knows if she's going to win (it does seem like this whole season's purpose has been to crown Laine as the winner, after all), but at least she's in the finals and I get to buy her Idol single (I assume they're going to do that again this season for the Top 3).
Next week, the Top 3 perform for the last time for our votes. We get to see their hometown visits. We'll be treated to some guest performances by the likes of Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert. And the season 17 winner will be revealed! See ya then...
