Jeff Dodge's 2019 Emmy Predictions

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards is coming up on Sunday, September 22 at 8pm ET/5pm PT on FOX, hosted by no one--following in the footsteps of the Oscars. Below are my predictions.

(The winners in a handful of categories were recently announced at the Creative Arts Emmys, but I still wanted to mention what my predictions were so that everything is together in one blog post.)

Best Drama Series:
Game of Thrones

Not only should Game of Thrones win, but it completely deserves to win!

Best Comedy Series:
Veep

Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series:
Billy Porter, Pose

Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
Jodie Comer, Killing Eve

Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
Bill Hader, Barry

Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:
Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones

This category is a two- or three-person race, depending on how you look at it. It seems to be between two Game of Thrones actresses, Maisie Williams and Gwendoline Christie, with the possibility that Julia Garner could put off the win if the GoT contenders split the votes. But my personal pick, and who I'm ultimately predicting, is Maisie; I would love to see her win.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
Tony Hale, Veep

This race is between the two Tonys: Hale and Shalhoub. Most people are predicting the latter, but I'm sticking with the former.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
Olivia Coleman, Fleabag

My person pick is Alex Borstein, and she does seem to be a strong contender for the win, but I'm ultimately predicting the recent Oscar winner.

Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series:
Bradley Whitford, The Handmaid's Tale
[WINNER: Bradley Whitford, The Handmaid's Tale]

Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series:
Phylicia Rashad, This Is Us
[WINNER: Cherry Jones, The Handmaid's Tale]

I predicted Cherry Jones last year, and I should have stuck to my guns this time as well.

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:
Peter MacNicol, Veep
[WINNER: Luke Kirby, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel]

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:
Sandra Oh, Saturday Night Live
[WINNER: Jane Lynch, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel]

I'm so happy that Jane Lynch ultimately won; why didn't I pick her?!

Best Limited Series:
Chernobyl

The race here is between Chernobyl and When They See Us. A legitimate case could be made for either one. Most people are predicting When They See Us; I'm going to go out on a slight limb from the top favorite.

Best TV Movie:
Bandersnatch (Black Mirror)

Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie:
Jharrel Jerome, When They See Us

Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie:
Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon

Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie:
Ben Whishaw, A Very English Scandal

Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie:
Patricia Clarkson, Sharp Objects

Best Reality Competition Program:
RuPaul's Drag Race

Best Structured Reality Program:
Queer Eye
[WINNER: Queer Eye]

Best Unstructured Reality Program:
United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell
[WINNER: United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell]

Best Reality Show Host:
RuPaul, RuPaul's Drag Race
[WINNER: RuPaul, RuPaul's Drag Race]

Best Variety Talk Series:
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Best Variety Sketch Series:
Saturday Night Live

Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded):
Hannah Gadsby: Nanette
[WINNER: Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney Live from Liverpool]

There were a lot of strong contenders in this category. I know a lot of people were disappointed that Beyonce didn't win for Homecoming. However, I personally would not have voted for it. For me, I'd go with either Carpool Karaoke or Hannah Gadsby. The former was such a beautifully crafted special, and the latter was one of the most powerful (comedy?) specials I've ever seen.
