American Idol 16: Top 10
Air Date: Sunday, April 29, 2018 (8-10pm)
Theme: Disney Night
It's time for the finals to begin! The Top 10 were revealed last week, and now these 10 remaining contestants only have America to save them now. And speaking of America, Idol made history tonight as the first reality competition show ever to air live in every time zone in the country. This really is unprecedented. Because I live on the West Coast, I've never truly been able to watch my favorite show live -- until now -- and I live-tweeted every step of the way.
Not only are these next three weeks live everywhere, but viewers are able to vote in real time, with the results being announced at the end of the episode. That's what happened tonight, as the Top 10 performed Disney songs, and three finalists were eliminated.
Here's my live Twitter recap for the Top 10...

I'm live-tweeting tonight's #AmericanIdol as its airs LIVE in every time zone! Here are my thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop10 #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("The Bare Necessities"): Only Maddie would choose a song like this--and only Maddie could actually pull off a song like this. It really fits her music style, and I heard some fantastic vocal moments for her. #Idol #DisneyNight #Top10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Jurnee ("How Far I'll Go"): As soon as she started singing, I had a smile on my face. It's a beautiful song, and like with Maddie, Jurnee has picked a song that's perfect for her beautiful voice. Partway thru, the arrangement changed slightly, but it didn't hurt her. #Idol #Top10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Cade Foehner: ("Kiss the Girl"): While it's good he's changing it up & choosing a slower song, this wasn't the right slow song for him. He was in his lower register most of the time, which exposed his vocal weaknesses. Only 1 moment at end I liked, when he picked things up. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Did Ryan Seacrest just hint that Cade and Gabby are secretly dating or something? #AmericanIdol #Idol #Top10 #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Ada Vox ("The Circle of Life"): Of course Ada would go with one of the biggest, best & most iconic Disney songs ever! (Remember when J-Hud did this?) The first part was really good. But at some point Ada's voice started going sharp every so often so hit & miss. #Idol #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Michelle Sussett ("Remember Me"): AMERICA, VOTE HER OUT TONIGHT!!! She's bringing the show down every time she's on stage. There were some moments during tonight's performance where I cringed while she sang. #AmericanIdol #Idol #Top10 #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("Colors of the Wind"): This isn't the kind of song I'd expect from her, but it is Disney night, after all. And while this probably won't be one we'll remember from her, she still managed to pull it off beautifully--I particularly liked her voice at the end. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("Beauty and the Beast"): I wasn't sure about this at first; it was kinda forgettable. But then once he opened his arms & belted out that big note, he captured my attention from then on. Lovely voice. If anything saves him, it's that. #Idol #DisneyNight #Top10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018

Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("You've Got a Friend in Me"): It's hard not to smile when hearing this song. I've said a lot that he's a generic country singer--and that's still apparent tonight (this song was never gonna elevate him), but he had some nice vocal moments at the end. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Catie Turner ("Once Upon a Dream"): She's really come into her own in her last two performances. Tonight, I'm not sure I like this song, but she was fine on it--some beautiful vocals, though it did drag/was a little slow at times. #AmericanIdol #DisneyNight #Idol #Top10— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
Dennis Lorenzo ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"): He was in the danger zone last week, but he doesn't deserve to leave with this performance, though who knows how the real-time voting will affect things. A simple performance but with some really beautiful vocals! Loved it! #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
My favorites of the night: Maddie Poppe, Jurnee, Gabby Barrett & Dennis Lorenzo.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
The weakest of the night: Michelle Sussette & Cade Foehner.#AmericanIdol #Idol #Top10 #DisneyNight
Results:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018
In the Top 7:
Caleb, Gabby, Michael, Cade, Maddie, Catie & Jurnee!
(All 3 I voted for made it!)
Eliminated:
Ada, Michelle & Dennis.
All 3 who went home were in the danger zone, so none of these are surprises, even though I really liked Dennis tonight.#Idol #DisneyNight
It was really exciting to be able to watch #AmericanIdol LIVE as it's airing in every time zone. I've never been able to watch this live before, living on the West Coast, and I'm glad I was able to live-tweet as I watched. #Idol #Top10 #DisneyNight— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 30, 2018

I said last week that I wasn't happy with one of the singers who made it into the Top 10 and that now America has a chance to right that wrong, which is exactly what happened tonight! I'm so happy to see Michelle Sussett gone.
And as one of my tweets mentioned, all three of tonight's eliminated contestants were in the danger zone last week. Because of that, I'm worried for Jurnee's chances. Two will be eliminated next time, so if tonight's outcome goes as expected for next week, then Jurnee will be going home, along with someone else. I don't know who else might be in danger, though.
But speaking of next time, the Top 7 will be singing the music of Prince. Hopefully, some great performances can come from that. See ya then...
