American Idol 16: Top 7
Air Date: Sunday, May 6, 2018 (8-10pm)
Themes: Prince/Songs from the Year You Were Born
It's the second of three live-in-every-time-zone episodes! Once again, that new element brought a lot of excitement to the show. And once again, I live-tweeted every episode. I voted, like I always do. And then at the end of the night, two of the remaining seven finalists were eliminated.
Here's my live Twitter recap for the Top 7...
[More: American Idol Live Twitter Recap: The Top 10 Perform]
I'm live-tweeting tonight's LIVE #AmericanIdol! My thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
There are two themes tonight. The #Top7 are performing #Prince songs as well as songs from the year they were born. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Jurnee ("Kiss"): What a fun way to kick off the night! She sounded great, and I really enjoyed this. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("I Hope You Dance"): Wow--what a beautiful performance! This was the perfect country ballad for her to sing. She can do anything, can't she? #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("I Would Die 4 U"): This was really fun. He felt at ease (I don't know what the judges were talking about on that front). A nice falsetto at one point. (On a small negative, following Gabby, will I remember this, though?) #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Cade Foehner ("Who Will Save Your Soul"): During the mentor/rehearsal intro video, I thought this could be a good moment for him. And generally it was. I didn't like the start--his voice sounded terrible. But once the song picked up, he was right in his wheelhouse. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Catie Turner ("Oops!...I Did It Again"): I didn't recognize the song at first--she really changed up the arrangement. Ultimately, I liked what she brought to the song. (Only 1 noticeable bad note at end.) She should team up with Postmodern Jukebox to cover this. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("Amazed"): What a obvious country song for him to go with. Not that it's a bad song or anything, but it's been done to death, it's a super safe choice, and once again he's deciding not to have a breakout moment. Fine vocals, but nothing special. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("Nothing Compares 2 U"): Sitting at the piano, she delivered a simple & lovely performance. Once again, I love the tone of her voice--she sounded beautiful. I have nothing bad to say about this--except I wish it was longer! #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("My Heart Will Go On"): This was hit and miss for me. This song is so much bigger than what he can ever offer vocally--he just can't pull off this song to its full potential. But there were some nice moments, particularly at the end. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Cade Foehner ("Jungle Love"): This is obviously the perfect fit for him. He didn't do anything other than what he always does--which is a little bit of a problem (like with Caleb), but this was better than his 1st performance. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore"): Wow! And another wow! She infused a lot of soulful and bluesy feelings into this performance, which really elevated it. And the way she ended it--triple wow! Even better than her 1st performance! #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Jurnee ("Back at One"): This song is an #Idol classic going back to the early years of this show. I like that she changed up the arrangement to slow it down and make it her own. Vocally, she was fantastic. I do wonder, though, if this will resonate with others. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018

Catie Turner ("Manic Monday"): Oh no! She forgot the words right at the beginning and didn't sing for the longest time! I thought she would tell the band to start over a la Brooke White but she didn't. She looked nervous the entire time, which made it hard to watch. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("If It Makes You Happy"): Of her 2 performances, I prefer her first one. The main reason is because with this one, some of those lower notes brought the performance down just a little. But this was by no means bad. I did like hearing her cover this. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("When Doves Cry"): I didn't recognize this at first. The changed-up arrangement does elevate this above what I'd normally expect from him. Vocals are still the same as always. But the arrangement will make me remember this. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
My favorites of the night: Gabby (both songs), Catie Turner (1st song) & Maddie Poppe (1st song).— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 7, 2018
The weakest of the night: Michael J. Woodard (2nd song) & Catie Turner (2nd song).#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop7 #Top7 #Prince

In the Top 7:
Caleb, Maddie, Cade, Gabby & Michael!
Eliminated:
Jurnee & Catie.
Forgetting the words sent Catie home. And I'm not surprised by Jurnee--even though I voted for her--danger zone 2 wks ago. I thought it'd be Jurnee & Michael going home.#AmericanIdol #Idol
Last week's eliminations were not surprising at all. And this week's were not either. Last week, three of the four danger zone contestants saved by the judges got cut, so it was obvious that the fourth danger zone singer, Jurnee, would be next on the chopping block. I've really liked her this season, but even I knew this was coming.
As for Catie, as I said in one of the above tweets, her forgetting the words is what sent her home. After that happened, I did think, though, that she would get sympathy votes and maybe even be safe as a result. It's because of that that I thought Michael would be a goner instead.
Things are getting down to the wire. And since it's obvious that Gabby and Cade will be in the finals, that means two of Michael, Caleb and Maddie will be cut next week. I think Michael will for sure be gone. But as far as Caleb and Maddie are concerned, I don't know what will happen. For me personally, I really want Maddie to stick around. But we all know the voting tendencies of viewers and it wouldn't be surprising if Caleb advanced. I mean, someone like Caleb would definitely make it to the finals on The Voice, even if it's only to be the first one out.
Anyway, that's all for next time, when the Top 5 perform. And Carrie Underwood will also perform, as well as mentor the finalists. See ya then...
