American Idol 16: Finale
Air Date: Monday, May 21, 2018 (9-11pm)
It's the season 16 finale of American Idol! Two years ago, we thought we were saying goodbye to this show, and now it's time to crown another winner!
When the show was on before, I posted recaps online, initially on one of my blogs and then on other entertainment websites. But this season, I decided to try something different; I've been tweeting my thoughts on all the performances while watching. And, in fact, this new recapping method for me has ended up working really well, particularly because the show went live in every time zone for a few weeks, allowing me to truly live-tweet and experience this show in the moment with everyone else.
So for the last time this season, here's my Twitter recap for the season 16 finale...
[More: American Idol Twitter Recap: The Top 3 Perform]
I'm live-tweeting the West Coast airing of tonight's #AmericanIdol season 16 finale! #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
B/c it's not live coast-to-coast like the last 3 weeks have been, I'll be staying away from my Twitter feed, my notifications and trending topics so I don't accidentally spoil myself. I know, I'm already on Twitter, so it's risky business, but I'm only sticking with this thread.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
The two-hour finale kicks off with Lionel Richie performing "All Night Long." Ooh, that voice is rough. The instruments are really overpowering his voice too. (Oh, look, the Top 10 join him!) #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
It looks like they're in the same studio they've been at this season, instead of going to a big arena like they normally do for finales. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson does a SPOT-ON impression of Lionel Richie! That is hysterical! I can't stop laughing over here! (Followed by a video package of Lionel moments.) #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Mustard and Nick Jonas perform "Anywhere." Who's Mustard?! Does anyone actually know? Then Jurnee and Nick perform "Jealous." I'm happy to see Jurnee back on that stage. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Ryan Seacrest teases a dramatic elimination. Does this mean it's going to happen in this first hour? They're not going to drag it out until right before the winner is announced? #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Luke Bryan performs "Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset." And then Gabby Barrett and Luke perform "Most People are Good." (Followed by a video package of Luke moments.) #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Dennis Lorenzo, Cade Foehner & Gary Clark Jr. perform "Bright Lights." Seeing Cade back on that stage, I'm reminded that a lot of people assumed he would be in the finals, with Gabby. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of his voice, I thought that would happen. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Maddie Poppe and Kermit the Frog perform "Rainbow Connection"! #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Noah Davis, who I believe was eliminated before the Top 24, is presented with an alpaca, since he said during his audition that he wanted one. He even is given an adoption certificate. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a joke or if it's serious. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson & Darius Rucker perform "Wagon Wheel." When Darius was first introduced, I was like, ugh. And then when I saw what song it was, I burst out laughing because this is like the only song he ever sings. He's such a joke at this point. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Jimmy Kimmel comes out to present a "time capsule" of some of the show's most cherished memories. A teeny tiny Simon Cowell T-shirt, Ryan's frosted hair tips from S1, Steven Tyler's scarves & dreamcatchers, the tips of Adam Lambert's fingerless gloves... #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
...From Justin to Kelly DVD, the dawg/dog Randy was always talking about, Sanjaya's hair, Sanjaya himself! (where did his hair go?!?! He looks like a middle-aged guy now)--the crying girl is in the audience! #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Kimmel says that that DVD is the only copy of From Justin to Kelly that ever sold. This whole bit is of course a joke/played for laughs, but I must point out that that can't be the only copy sold because--no joke--I have a copy of From Justin to Kelly. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
We're halfway through the #AmericanIdol season 16 finale! #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
A video package looking back at this season. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Gabby Barrett & Maddie Poppe perform "Meant to Be" with Bebe Rexha. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Time for results!— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
In the Top 2 are...Caleb Lee Hutchinson...and Maddie Poppe!
Which means Gabby Barrett is eliminated in 3rd place.#AmericanIdol #IdolFinale
Um...what?!?! I'm kinda pissed. I mean, I'm excited that Maddie's still there, but Gabby gone just like that? No! She was my #1 absolute favorite this entire season--and I was so wanting her to win! This has really put a damper on the night.#AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
I've noticed in online polls on various entertainment news sites lately that Maddie has really been getting a TON of support in recently days/weeks, so I'm wondering if Maddie & Gabby split the vote, allowing Caleb to sneak in and for one of the girls to leave. #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
...Also, taking all that into consideration, I'm also wondering if there's been some Gabby backlash lately, which hurt her in this week's voting. This really sucks--she really does have the most potential out of all of them. A record label needs to sign her! #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
A video package showing Ada Vox, Noah Davis and some seemingly random contestant eliminated before the Top 24 (who is he? I don't recognize him at all.) perform "Hello." #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Layla Spring and her little sister Dixie perform "Blue." Partway through, LeAnn Rimes comes out to sing the rest with them. This was a complete surprise--they had no idea this was happening. Layla & Dixie are freaking out! It's adorable! #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
A video package of Katy Perry moments. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Katy Perry and Catie Turner perform a stripped-down version of "Part of Me." And this is fantastic! They sound amazing together! This may be the best performance of the night so far! #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Yolanda Adams & Michael J. Woodard perform "What the World Needs Now." Words we need to hear--& live by--right now. When it comes to this song & #Idol, I'm reminded of contestants performing this song back in season 2--it was even released as a single. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
The Top 2--Caleb & Maddie--are on stage. And Caleb reveals that he and Maddie are boyfriend and girlfriend! Oh my god!!! They're a couple and they BOTH made it to the Top 2? They then perform "Over the Rainbow"--okay, that's freaking adorable! #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Normally the Top 2 receive cars. But since no car company is sponsoring #Idol this year, the Top 2 get vacations to Hawaii! This is even more perfect since the two are a couple. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Ada Vox and Patti LaBelle perform "Lady Marmalade." This was really fun, if a bit pitchy at times. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
The winner of #AmericanIdol season 16 is...— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
MADDIE POPPE!!!
She performs her winner's single "Going Going Gone." The rest of the Top 10 join her on stage and everyone's hugging and trying to sing and crying and being excited. #IdolFinale
As the winner, Maddie will perform at the Hollywood Bowl this week as well as at the Radio Disney Music Awards. She's also obviously getting a record deal with Hollywood Records. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Even though I was obviously pissed a while ago that Gabby didn't even make the Top 2, that doesn't negate the fact that I'm so happy for Maddie. I was smiling the entire time she sang after winning. Gabby & Maddie were my top favorites this season. Both made the #IdolFinale!— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Also, one more comment on Caleb and Maddie--they're not the only #Idol couple this season. As Ryan let slip a few weeks ago, Gabby and Cade are also an item. Romance really was in the air on #AmericanIdol this year. Has anything like this ever happened before? #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Well, another season is now behind us. Two years ago, we thought we were saying goodbye to #AmericanIdol--and it came back this year to new judges, new contestants, some amazing voices and the usual ups & downs along the way. It's been a fun ride. Here's to season 17! #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 22, 2018
Another American Idol winner has been crowned, and another season is over. I'm looking forward to seeing what Gabby and Maddie do going forward. And I'm looking forward to seeing the Top 7 on tour this summer--I've never missed an Idol concert, and this year is no different.
American Idol will be back next year for season 17, with host Ryan Seacrest and judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie all returning. See ya then...
