It's finale week! American Idol season 16 is about to come to a close, and the final three singers performed for the final time on Sunday night. They've all performed, I've voted and now it's time to wait with bated breath to see who will win it all.
Here's my Twitter recap for the Top 3...

I'm live-tweeting the West Coast airing of tonight's #AmericanIdol! Here are my thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018

Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("Johnny Cash Heart"): Did he start too early? This original song felt a little too slow than it could've been. And there were moments his voice didn't sound good. When he was fine, he was only fine--his usual generic country voice. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("Rivers Deep"): Overall, this was a really fun song! There were some moments I wasn't sure of (but not Gabby's fault--that's the song), and this wasn't as country as I thought it'd be. But she pulled it off. Some nice vocal moments. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("Going Going Gone"): This original song works really well for Maddie's musical style--it just fits her. And it's a pretty catchy song--I'm repeating the chorus in my head, even though the song's over. Her voice sounded great as well. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018

Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("Don't Close Your Eyes"): Even though one's an original and this a reprise, this song was much better for Caleb. His voice was stronger, he seemed more sure of himself, I felt a connection between him and the lyrics. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("Little Red Wagon"): There's so many great songs she could've reprised. I LOVED this the 1st time she covered this, and she didn't disappoint this time. High-octane. Her personality shines through so much on this song. Loved every bit of it! #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("Don't Ever Let Your Children Grow Up"): I like that she reprised one of her own original songs b/c this is #IdolFinale week, and it allows us to see who she truly is musically when she's creating her own songs. Once again, her voice is very pleasing to the ear.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Eliminated contestants from this season return to perform original songs: Harper Grace ("Yard Sale"), Jonny Brenns ("Blue Jeans"), Michelle Sussett ("I'm a Dreamer")--terrible sounding & cringe-worthy, go away Michelle!, & Caty Turner ("21st Century Machine"). #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Round 3--Hometown Visits/Songs Dedicated to Their Hometowns... #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("Folsom Prison Blues"): With a country voice like Caleb's, it's hard to go wrong with a Johnny Cash number. It's obviously a great song, it's in Caleb's wheelhouse and this was a pretty solid performance. #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("Don't Stop Believin'"): This is one of my favorite songs ever! I was not expecting Gabby to cover this--I assumed she'd do country--so I consider myself pleasantly surprised. And this is such a showstopping number! Can she win already? #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("Landslide"): When Ryan said she's singing this song, I got really excited. And after hearing it, I want an entire show of Maddie singing the songs of Fleetwood Mac. I've said this before, but her tone is exquisite! And beautiful falsetto! #AmericanIdol #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
My favorites of the night: Gabby (rounds 2 & 3 songs) & Maddie (round 3 song).— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
The weakest of the night: Caleb (round 1 song)#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale
Even though it seems logical that Gabby should win, seeing how large the crowds were for Caleb and Maddie on their hometown visits shows that neither one of them should be counted out. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018

My Votes:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Gabby Barrett: 10 (app) + 10 (website) + 10 (texting) = 30 (max votes).
(I've voted for both Gabby & Maddie all season. But it's finale week, so I finally bit the bullet and voted for just one.)#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale
Winner Prediction: Gabby Barrett.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
Now that all the competition performances are behind us, I'm going to say that I can't discount any of these three finalists as potential winners, particularly Caleb since guys normally win this show.#AmericanIdol #IdolFinale
Runner-Up Prediction: Caleb Lee Hutchinson— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 21, 2018
3rd Place Prediction: Maddie Poppe#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop3 #IdolFinale
Well, there it is. They've done all they can at this point, and now it's up to America to choose a winner. This is the first time an American Idol finale has had three contestants competing instead of just two. So I don't know if that'll affect things: is it obvious who will win? Will there be vote-splitting, causing someone else to win? Will the usual Idol trend of guys winning continue? Will a girl finally win after all these years?
Only one more episode to go. Can't wait! See ya then...
