American Idol 16: Top 5
Air Date: Sunday, May 13, 2018 (8-10pm)
Themes: Carrie Underwood/Songs Dedicated to Moms
It's the final live-in-every-time-zone episode of American Idol season 16, and I have to say I have really been enjoying this new format, even though it was only for three weeks.
Next week is the finale, so tonight was about finding out which three contestants would make it to the finals. Here's my live Twitter recap for the Top 5...
[More: American Idol Live Twitter Recap: The Top 7 Perform]
I'm live-tweeting tonight's LIVE #AmericanIdol! My thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop5 #Top5 #CarrieUnderwood— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 13, 2018
Again, there are two themes tonight. The #Top5 are performing songs by Carrie Underwood, as well as songs dedicated to moms in honor of today being #MothersDay. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
The show is starting off with the Top 5 performing #CarrieUnderwood's "See You Again"--with Carrie herself! #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #Top5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Oh, and #CarrieUnderwood is not just one of the themes tonight--she's also the mentor and will perform! #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #CryPretty— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("Flat on the Floor"): I'm a huge Carrie fan so these are all songs I can't wait to see covered. This was a fun start to the show on a fun/upbeat song. I have a feeling, though, there will be a lot more memorable/stronger performances than this later on. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
The hometown visits are happening this season! Those are always great to watch. That'll be shown next week with the Top 3/Finale. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("Last Name"): I LOVE that Gabby is performing this! We all knew this theme would be perfect for her--since she's Carrie 2.0--and it was! So much energy in this performance, she sounded great, I had a smile on my face the entire time. She needs to win! #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Two additional notes about Gabby: 1--How adorable was she meeting Carrie? And saying that her husband is hot, lol. 2--Can #CarrieUnderwood come back for the finale to perform with Gabby? I need that duet! #AmericanIdol #IdolTop5 #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Cade Foehner ("Undo It"): Carrie has a lot of upbeat songs that allow her to just rock out--so Cade had plenty to choose from to fit his style. Overall, this was a solid performance. A couple questionable vocal moments, but this was still fun. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Reigning #AmericanIdol winner Trent Harmon is talking with Ryan Seacrest about his upcoming debut album! #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("So Small"): Carrie Night should be perfect for the country singers on the show. This song feels right when Carrie sings it, but for Caleb it felt a little karaoke. Was there not another Carrie song better suited to him? #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
More thoughts on Caleb: I'm glad Katy was more tough on Caleb tonight. Is this a sign of how they want the results to go? #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("I Told You So"): Not just any Carrie song would work for Maddie's style, so I'm glad she chose this. This wasn't perfect, though. Pre-chorus, her voice sounded a little flat or something. But from the chorus on, it was beautiful smooth-sailing vocals. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
To cap off the Carrie portion of the episode, #CarrieUnderwood herself performed her new single #CryPretty. Powerful voice as always! BTW, I went to her concert a couple years ago--she was fantastic! What a show! #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Carrie Underwood is trending! #CryPretty— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("I Have Nothing"): Oh my god--Gabby did #WhitneyHouston! She created a moment for herself with this performance. At one point, my mouth opened & stayed open in amazement. Her voice was better than I have ever heard her before--exquisitely beautiful! #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Cade Foehner ("Simple Man"): What a great song, and of course Cade would go with something like this. It's so in his wheelhouse, but it didn't feel tired. This may be one of my favorite performances of his. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("Still I Rise"): There were some good moments in this performance, particularly in the 2nd half. But when you have people like Gabby, Cade, etc in the mix, I don't see how either one of his performances tonight are enough to advance him. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018

Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("Stars in Alabama"): This was better than his first performance earlier. But tonight he hasn't done anything to tell me he actually wants to be in the finals. Solid vocals as usual, of course, but this was nothing special--like it is almost every time. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("God Only Knows"): There were some moments I heard that beautiful tone of hers shine thru. But I don't think either of her performances tonight were her best, which sucks b/c I would love to see her in the finals. This wasn't bad by any means, though. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
My favorites of the night: Gabby (both songs--but her Whitney cover was THE best of the night) & Cade Foehner (2nd song).— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
The weakest of the night: Caleb (1st song).#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #CarrieUnderwood #CryPretty
My Votes:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Gabby Barrett: 10 (app) + 10 (website) + 10 (texting) = 30 (max votes);
Maddie Poppe: 10 (app) + 10 (website) + 10 (texting) = 30 (max votes).#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #CarrieUnderwood #CryPretty
Who will go home? It'll be two of Michael, Caleb and Maddie. Gabby & Cade are for sure in the finals. I'm going to say Michael is going home, but I really don't know who else. Maddie got the final spot, which isn't the pimp spot anymore, so it could hurt her. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
Results:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
In the Top 3 (Finals):
Caleb, Gabby & Maddie!
Eliminated:
Cade & Michael.
Wow! I did not expect Cade to be cut. Even though I've criticized his vocals before, this was the big shocker of the night.#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #IdolTop3 #CarrieUnderwood #CryPretty
I'm so excited that my favorites--Gabby & Maddie--are in the finals!— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
So...there are two ways to think about this 3-way finale match-up: either (even though they're not the same genre) Gabby & Maddie will split votes maybe b/c of the way people vote, or Gabby has just won #Idol.
Between these three, if Gabby and Caleb get the most votes next week, this is like Scotty & Lauren all over again, so maybe Caleb has a shot at this. But I really hope and want Gabby to win.#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop5 #IdolTop3— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) May 14, 2018
So there you have it--Gabby Barrett, Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson are in the finals. Gabby and Maddie have been my favorites this season, so it's exciting to see both of them still here. And as I said above, I really want Gabby to win--let's make it happen!
There's only two more episodes left in season 16. First up on Sunday, the final three singers will perform for the last time for our votes. And then the next night, Monday, is the season finale, where a winner will be crowned! See ya then...
