American Idol 16: Top 24 (Part 1)--Celebrity Duets
Air Date: Monday, April 9, 2018 (8-10pm)
This rebooted season of American Idol has generally stayed the same to what we knew from its original run on FOX. However, at the semifinals, ABC has changed things up by adding a celebrity duet portion. I was looking forward to seeing how this turned out, so here's my Twitter recap for The Top 24 (Part 1)--Celebrity Duets...

The #AmericanIdol semifinals continue tonight with celebrity duets! This thread will chronicle my thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop24 #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Catie Turner & Andy Grammer ("Good to Be Alive"): This is a fun song for someone like Catie--you could tell she had fun. Unfortunately, the longer Andy was on stage, the more I focused on him, not her, which is not what we want to see. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets #IdolTop24 #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Cade Foehner & Bishop Briggs ("Never Tear Us Apart"): OK, she's got a great voice, but who is Bishop Briggs? These two complemented each other very well. They both brought it--and it was so much fun to see them rocking out--loved this! #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Layla Spring & Sugarland ("Stuck Like Glue"): Sugarland's one of my fav country acts (so glad they're back together)! I enjoyed this mainly b/c they all had fun & it's such a catchy song. But I still question her readiness for the big stage. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Dominique & Aloe Blacc ("Wake Me Up"): Another great song! But why did Aloe start it off? It made me pay more attention to him instead of Dominique--again, that's bad for him. B/c the song is low-key, there was no chance for him to shine. #AmericanIdol #IdolDuets #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Brandon Diaz & Luis Fonsi ("Despacito"): The melody is obviously catchy, and you can't help but groove along to it. But I feel like it's not the best song for Brandon to shine. Both him & Luis were on the same wavelength, so Brandon didn't step up as a result. #IdolDuets #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Kay Kay & Pat Monahan ("Drive By"): I sound like a broken record at this point, but another great song! But once again, I don't know about this for Kay Kay--there were times I thought she was off from Pat, and she seemed unsure a couple times. #IdolDuets #AmericanIdol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Trevor McBane & Bishop Briggs ("River"): Oh, this is Bishop's song? Okay, I have heard it! I have to say, I really got into this performance--so much fun! They generally blended well together, but Bishop was the star & Trevor's vocals were off quite a bit. #IdolDuets #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Michelle Sussett & Luis Fonsi ("I Can’t Make You Love Me"): Finally a song that allows us to truly hear her voice & what she can do. This is quite a bit better than what we've heard from her before, but I'm still unsure and I still hope she leaves sooner than later. #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Jonny Brenns & Andy Grammer ("Back Home"): One word to sum this up: fun! Jonny & Andy's styles work well together and I really enjoyed this. It doesn't really matter that this wasn't going to match up to his performance from last night--he's sticking around. #IdolDuets #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Dennis Lorenzo & Allen Stone ("Unaware"): One word (well, actually two) to sum this up: very smooth! And those falsettos--wow--exquisite! Definitely one of the best of the night! I loved this performance & want them to duet again! #IdolDuets #IdolTop24 #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Michael J. Woodard & Pat Monahan ("Angel in Blue Jeans"): Don't let the celeb start the song--as I said, it takes the focus away from the contestant! And in fact, I will remember more what Pat did than what Michael did. But they still did well together. #IdolDuets #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Gabby Barrett & Sugarland ("Stay"): I was looking forward to hearing from Gabby again after last night. I was worried when Jennifer started instead of Gabby, but it actually didn't detract. Their voices together--beautiful! They drew me in right from the beginning. #IdolDuets— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
My favorites of the night: Dennis Lorenzo, Cade Foehner & Gabby Barrett.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
The weakest of the night: Trevor McBane & Kay Kay.#IdolDuets #IdolTop24 #Idol #AmericanIdol
Results:— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 10, 2018
Staying: Cade (no-brainer), Michelle (she did improve, but ugh), Dennis (yes!), Gabby (yay!), Jonny (yep), Michael (not surprised) & Catie (the quirky personality has kept her around again).
Eliminated: Trevor, Dominique, Brandon, Kay Kay & Layla.#IdolDuets #IdolTop24
Week one of the semifinals is done. Next week, the remaining 12 contestants in the Top 24 will perform solos and duet with celebrity singers, and then judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie will finalize the Top 14. See ya then...
