American Idol 16: Top 24 (Part 1)--Solos
Air Date: Sunday, April 8, 2018 (8-10pm)
Four weeks after the return of the best singing competition show ever (with new judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie), the American Idol season 16 semifinals have begun! And like I've done with previous seasons, I'll be recapping/giving my thoughts on all the performances.
Years ago, I recapped on my TV Watch Online blog, then eventually provided recaps for other entertainment websites. I've decided to do something different this time around. The night that Idol episodes air, I'll be tweeting commentary on the performances as I'm watching. Then I'll embed those tweets into Twitter recaps here on my personal blog.
This is the first week of the semifinals, with half of the Top 24 performing on the first night. So without further ado, here's my Twitter recap for The Top 24 (Part 1)--Solos...
The #AmericanIdol semifinals begin tonight! This thread will chronicle my thoughts on all the performances... #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Dominique ("Ain't Nobody"): This is a really fun way to start off the night! And that falsetto is great! Having said all that, will I remember this by the end of the night?— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Layla Spring ("A Broken Wing"): Going back to the auditions, I've always thought she's good, but I'm waiting for great. Now about tonight, I'm not sure during the first half, but then things kick into gear & she's really getting into it and I am too! #AmericanIdol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Catie Turner ("Call Me"): She's always been one of the most memorable b/c of her hilariously quirky personality. But is that all she has? Tonight, "Call Me" is meh & amateurish, something she maybe can get away with now but not during the finals. #AmericanIdol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Dennis Lorenzo ("Rude"): I absolutely LOVE this song! And this is generally a fun performance, particularly the first half. Things kinda dip in the back half. Overall, this doesn't show him off as a vocalist & it's very forgettable except for song choice itself. #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Michelle Sussett ("If I Were a Boy"): I've never been a fan of hers--The only reason she's gotten this far is because she's "fun," apparently. Tonight does nothing to change my mind. A major cringe-worthy note, and lots of messy notes throughout. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("Golden Slumbers"): I don't think I'm familiar with this Beatles song, but it doesn't matter because Michael does well with it. He's one of the best vocally so far tonight. & he's still raw enough that he has room to grow & lots of potential. #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Trevor McBane ("Way Down We Go"): As soon as he first sings the titular line, I'm thinking this could be really cool. And while it seems like it might, his voice is a bit of a mess throughout, rough around the edges. This song is a nice fit but it just doesn't land. #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Jonny Brenns ("Georgia"): I wasn't sure if I was gonna like this at first, but man oh man, he nails it! He's absolutely effortless when he transitions into his falsettos, which are super smooth and beautiful, really. I love this performance! #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Kay Kay ("Love on the Brain"): This is one of those songs that really allow a singer to show off vocals. Kay Kay definitely has the talent. This is the genre/lane I can see her going down post-#Idol. She obviously did the song as-is but I still loved it. #AmericanIdol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Brandon Diaz ("Hello"): This year's singers have been covering the judges' songs far more than I've ever seen in previous seasons. Brandon's rendition really draws me in big-time. He's off vocally at times, but the way he takes on this song somewhat overrides it. #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("My Church"): I really like her & what she's bringing to the show. Her mainstream style of country music (like Carrie/Miranda/etc) is why I look forward to her performances. I'm smiling from start to finish. Love the way she ends it. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Cade Foehner ("All Along the Watchtower"): I can see why people will love this performance. Cade's definitely bringing his own niche to the competition that could serve him well. Having said that, for me, I personally preferred Gabby's to his performance. #AmericanIdol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
My favorites of the night: Gabby Barrett, Jonny Brenns and Brandon Diaz. The weakest of the night: Michelle Sussett and Catie Turner. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop24— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 9, 2018
Now that half of the Top 24 have performed their solos, it's time for the duets with famous singers next time. Then the judges will eliminate five of the above contestants. See ya then...
