Air Date: Sunday, April 22, 2018 (8-10pm)
American Idol season 16 is at the point in the competition where the show has moved to the big stage! The Top 14 performed for our votes for the first time this season. Based on our votes, the top six vote-getters will advance to the Top 10. Also during Monday's episode, the remaining contestants will perform again, with the judges filling out the final four spots.
Here's my Twitter recap for The Top 14...

It's the Top 14 on #AmericanIdol--and time to start voting! Here's my thoughts on all 14 performances... #Idol #IdolTop14— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Caleb Lee Hutchinson ("Midnight Train to Memphis"): I don't think I know this song, but it's a good pick considering his genre. I'll say it again, though--he's still a generic country singer, has none of the vocal depth that Chris Stapleton has. His low notes weren't good. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Michelle Sussett ("Friends"): No no no!!! Why is she still here? She's far and away THE worst in the competition. This is not good! America, you better vote her OUT before she ends up sticking around even longer than she should have. #AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop14— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Marcio Donaldson ("It's a Miracle"): It's always fun to do a Barry Manilow song. But this is a terrible pick for Marcio--his voice was all over the place and rarely did I hear a good moment. People love him when he can showcase his voice--this was the opposite of that. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Mara Justine ("This is Me"): I haven't seen #TheGreatestShowman yet but I love this song. I'm not sure what to make of this, though. After "Fight Song," I thought Mara would do better here. But being emotional right from the beginning negatively affected her vocals. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Garrett Jacobs ("Raging Fire"): Even though Phillip Phillips was a White Guy With Guitar like Garrett, PP has a lot of grit & depth to his voice. Garrett has none of that, so this just fell flat and didn't work for him at all (though the big moments at the end were good). #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Ada Vox ("The Show Must Go On"): Yet again, Ada is going with a big showstopping number. I mean, that's Ada's lane, so it's no surprise (though where's a current career in this?). I did hear a small handful of pitchy notes, which did detract a little. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Catie Turner ("Take Me to Church"): For maybe the 1st time I really was able to listen to the tone of Catie's voice--& I liked what I heard. A few pitchy notes towards the end but overall it was fun while still focusing on creating a quality vocal. She's changed her look, even.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Cade Foehner ("Black Magic Woman"): Cade was one of the standouts from the Top 24 but tonight I'm just not sure about this. He still stayed in his rocker lane but I won't remember anything about this performance. If anything, the guitar-playing was more a focus than vocals. #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Dennis Lorenzo ("In My Blood"): What is going on with everyone's voices tonight? There are too many singers with messy vocals. Dennis had that big-time in the 1st half, and he shouted too much. I started liking it in the 2nd half, and things started connecting more. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Maddie Poppe ("Homeward Bound"): I really like Maddie. She picks the perfect songs for her musical style every time. If all this is an indication of what she wants her post-#Idol music to be like, I'd buy her album. Tonight's performance was simple but beautiful--I loved it.— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Jurnee ("Bang Bang"): She's going with another Jessie J song. However, this one wasn't nearly has good as "Flashlight," despite my love for "Bang Bang." Maybe she was trying to do too much with it. If she advances, then we'll consider this her freebie/pass. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Jonny Brenns ("This is Gospel"): Another vocal mess--big time! I don't know this song, but even I can tell this was the wrong choice for him. Along these lines, if you can't pull off your lower-register, why even try? That negatively impacted the performance. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Michael J. Woodard ("Titanium"): This wasn't recognizable at first--he seemed to be changing it up a bit. That hurt him initially. But once the chorus hit, things started clicking into place & the 2nd half was quite fantastic with some great vocals. #AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Gabby Barrett ("The Climb"): The 1st word that popped in my head as she closed this performance was "wow!" She's my #1 favorite. Vocally she really nailed it while not overdoing it at all. It's time #Idol gets back to rewarding female country singers like her again. #AmericanIdol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
My favorites of the night: Gabby Barrett & Maddie Poppe (with an honorable mention to Catie Turner).— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
The weakest of the night: Michelle Sussett, Marcio Donaldson, Mara Justine & Jonny Brenns.#AmericanIdol #Idol #IdolTop14

Top 10 Predictions: Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner, Gabby Barrett, Catie Turner, Ada Vox, Michael J. Woodard, Garrett Jacobs, Marcio Donaldson, Jurnee & Mara Justine— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
Elimination Predictions: Michelle Sussett, Jonny Brenns, Dennis Lorenzo & Caleb Lee Hutchinson#AmericanIdol #Idol
Once 6 advance from America's votes the rest will perform for the judges' final picks, so things obviously may change based on tonight's performances. The ones I'm most unsure of (& could go either way) are Mara Justine, Dennis Lorenzo & Caleb Lee Hutchinson.#AmericanIdol #Idol— Jeff Dodge (@TheJeffDodge) April 23, 2018
As you can see in the final tweets above, I've layed out who I voted for and how many times I voted (the maximum is 10 votes per voting method per contestant).
