Jeff Dodge's Recommendations of the Week [2/19-2/25]:
TV Shows:
The Celebrity Apprentice Premiere (Sunday, 9-11pm, NBC)
I remember eight or so years ago I was in a movie theater waiting for a movie to start (don't remember which one, though), and one of the promos beforehand was for this new show starting soon called The Apprentice by the creator of Survivor, Mark Burnett. I was extremely intrigued, and wanted to watch the show (I was maybe 14 or 15 at the time and didn't know who Donald Trump was then).
Ever since then, I have been hooked week after week and season after season to The Apprentice and its Celebrity Apprentice reincarnation. In the past couple of years, Donald Trump has obviously been all over the media for political reasons. Most of America, including myself, doesn't agree with the ridiculous things he has said. But yet, I have found myself always hooked to his show.
We're now about to start another round of the celebrity edition. And I have to say, this time around I am only familiar with a few of the "stars." Usually, I'm familiar with at least a few more than that. But the person that I'm most looking forward to seeing is Clay Aiken, runner-up on season 2 of American Idol, and who has one of the best singing voices to come out of that show. If you haven't followed him post-Idol that much, you might not know this, but he is a very opinionated person; he's not afraid to say what he's thinking. And so I hope he brings that with him to The Apprentice.
Before the first Celeb version aired, I made a prediction on who would win just based on what I knew of the celebrities. I predicted that Piers Morgan would win, and he did. Before the second round, I predicted Joan Rivers and she ended up taking the crown. But last year, I incorrectly predicted that Sharon Osbourne would win. Once we got into the season, it was obvious she wouldn't win because she kept getting sick and taking time off. But Brett Michaels rightfully won.
Since I said I'm not all that familiar with the people competing this time around, it may be a little harder. But I'm going to go with Clay Aiken. Because if he shows the side of him that I mentioned above, he could prove to be a strong contestant and surprise everyone.
DVDs:
Puss in Boots (Friday, February 24, 2012)
I've been a fan of the Shrek franchise ever since the first movie came out. And even though that series ended with not as big of a bang (the hype wasn't there anymore), I was still excited about the Puss in Boots spin-off. I saw it in theaters (and the first movie that my nephew saw in a movie theater) and absolutely loved, loved, loved it! I have to say, it was probably one of the strongest animated movies to come out in a long time. Granted, I haven't seen such animated films as The Adventures of Tintin (yet). But I still fell in love with it. The DVD comes out this week, and I definitely will be picking up a copy for myself. And if they do end up doing a sequel, my hope is that it's like going from Shrek to Shrek 2 where the sequel was as good if not better than the original.
Movie Tickets:
The Hunger Games (Pre-Buy Tickets Beginning February 22)
While you're out picking up your copy of Puss in Boots, you might as well stop by your local movie theater to buy an advance ticket to The Hunger Games, the most anticipated film of 2012 (probably even more hyped than The Dark Knight Rises). We're just over a month away from The Hunger Games being released in theaters. Every week now, it seems that the anticipation and hype and buzz continues getting bigger and stronger. For me, the wait has become unbearable. So that's why I will probably be buying my tickets as early as possible. March 23 can't come fast enough...
